Welcome to the Art of Peace: The Ones.

A Virtual Art Gallery and Online Art Shop
in Support of United World Colleges

This is a project of uwcnetwork.org dedicated to the United World College ideals of a good education, international understanding, and service to the community.

On 19 October 2006, the Atlantic Appeal came to a spectacular close. Over a period of 3 years the Appeal has raised £ 14 million, mostly for much-needed capital projects at Atlantic College, and the Auction help with Art of Peace art alone raised £ 300,000.

It is the aim of the United World Colleges to allow students to attend the colleges regardless of their families' financial situation, and most of the funding for students at the College comes from scholarships; but more remains to be done. So our emphasis now is on generating scholarships for the next generations of students, and on putting the scholarship funding on a more secure long-term basis.

The One is the smallest standard size of painters' canvas, measuring 22 by 16 cm, and to us it represents the commonality of man. The Ones in this virtual exhibition were donated by many different artists, in support of the College, and in particular of the most needy students. The originator and curator of this project is François Paul-Cavallier (Atlantic College, class of 1964,) who has asked artists from around the world to create pieces especially for this project and donate them to the College for sale, and many have responded, sending us works in many different media and with a wide range of subjects.

So the works on this site are available "for sale" or in fact they are available to you in return for your donation, except for those that have already been "sold" either through this site or directly. The website functions like a regular online shop, and you pay or make your donation through PayPal.com with your credit card. Your payment for the painting(s) is essentially your donation to the Art of Peace project and your donation only goes to United World College scholarship funds and nothing else. Once or twice a year, we choose a UWC scholarship fund to transfer the collected funds to, and it can be to any of the 12 United World Colleges.

Please browse through this virtual gallery, which you may search by either artist, subject or other criteria, using the navigation menu and search fields. You must click the small thumbnails in order to see a good representation of each painting. Along with each One, you will find information about the artist by clicking the artist name when you have selected a painting (below the title in red text), including their e-mail address, address and website, where available. A painting may be displayed here, yet it may have been sold, which is indicated by it's availability. A sold painting has the text "This Artwork has been SOLD (not available)." underneath or above it depending on the view. These being originals, you may only order 1 painting of each, meaning that you must leave the quantity setting to 1 when you order. Shipment costs are normally calculated for you, and if you order more than 10 paintings, you will get free shipment.

As a Thank You to the artists, works will be shown on this site for at least six months, before and after they have been sold.

If you have contributed works, or if you are an artist who would like to participate in the Art of Peace Project and would like to receive blank canvases (up to 10 per artist), please check our FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section or click here.
